Cabinet Doors

The Bushwacker trailer has 2 open shelves above the bed that are great for storing clothing and camping gear. The only problem is that they dont stay put when trailering down the road. Enter, cabinet doors!

One of the great things about these doors, is that home depot sales shelves in "organic Ash" that are very similar to the interior of the bushwacker. Shout out to the Bushwacker owners Facebook group for the Tip!

The first thing you'll notice, is that the inside of the shelf does not provide a flat surface to flush mount the hinge. We need to make something to fill the gap.

I used a scrap peice of .25" plywood, cut down to size.  Its not a perfect fit, but close enough to fill the gap, and give the screw something to dig into.

Hold the block in place, and mark the holes. Pre drill the holes to prevent the wood from splitting when you drive the screws in

Drive in your screws. Make sure the back two screws are long enough to go through the plywood block, and into the inside frame of the shelf. The front two screws wont need to be as long. Once attached, it should look like this

Now we're ready to attach the doors. Lay the shelves on top of the open hinges. Make sure you leave a gap between the top of your door, and the face of the shelf. You want the top of the door to overlap the cabinet just a bit.  I gapped it between .5 & .75 ". Once you've got them straight, drive in your screws. *Make sure the screws are not to log so they dont poke out the face of your doors!

These hinges will support the door when open. I chose not to add hardware, but they can be easily added.  Now when you arrive to camp, your things will still be in the cabinets, and not on your bed!

** The shelf board I used is Rubbermaid Shelf Board, in Organic Ash. You can find this at Home Depot. I linked the closest color shelf i could find on amazon.
